About This City

North Haven was founded in 1786 by settlers when the Reverend James Pierpont (1659–1714) of New Haven gave 8 acres of land to his neighbors in the Northeast Parish.  North Haven was to provide these neighbors with a place to build a meeting house, a market place, and a training ground, as well as a place to bury their dead.  Today, the North Haven Green (also known as Pierpont Park) represents about half of the original donated land.  The first brickyard on the continent was established when Theophilus Eaton found clay on his property on the west side of the Quinnipiac River.  The brickyards continued to play an important role in the development and history of North Haven, well into the 20th century.

The first United States census in 1790 counted 1236 people in the agricultural community of North Haven.   However, the 1789 Grand List had found 1620 sheep in North Haven with the sheep outnumbering town's residents.  New roads were built to facilitate communications, namely the Hartford Turnpike in 1798 and the Middletown Turnpike in 1813.

By the middle of the nineteenth century, signs of the Industrial Revolution were apparent.  In 1838, the New Haven and Hartford Railroad had laid its tracks along the level sand plains by the Quinnipiac River.  In addition, small industries such as the manufacture of agricultural implements in Clintonville began in 1830.  On the 1850 census, 62% of the population were listed as farmers.  One third of the residents worked in various non-agricultural occupations such as mechanics, brickmakers, and shoemakers.  Trolleys were built in the 1900's to allow commuting to New Haven and these were later extended north into Wallingford.

Today, North Haven is a suburban residential community with a healthy and growing commercial, retail and manufacturing base.   There are more than 75 highly diversified manufacturing and commercial firms in North Haven, many of which are assessed at over $1,000,000.  North Haven has several industrial parks containing 490 acres, and boasts such corporate tenants as Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Marlin Firearms, and Covidien, manufacturers of medical devices, pharmaceuticals and medical supplies, serving healthcare needs everywhere.  North Haven, with its excellent park system and a wide variety of housing from the modest to magnificent, make it a quality place to live in - as well as to do business.
