I'm Art Fregeau of North Haven, CT - among my many hobbies is Ham Radio. I was licensed as a Novice (KN1WMQ) in 1962 and upgraded to a Conditional/General license with the new call of K1WMQ. I upgraded to Extra Class in November 2002. An application was made in August, 2007 for the AF1HS vanity call which was received on October 7, 2007.
I operate on 80, 40, 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters SSB, 2 and 6 meters FM as well as 220 MHz and 440 MHz FM.
The rig is an Icom IC-706MKIIG running 100 watts into a GAP Titan DX Vertical, 5 feet above ground (don't laugh - it works well)!! On 40 and 80 meters, I prefer my old HyGain 2BDQ doublet that's up about 30 feet. I also use a Yaesu FT-1500 as a 2-meter base unit into a Workman UVS-200 Dual-Band (2-m, 70 cm) Base Antenna as well as an Icom IC-F121 to monitor Coast Guard communications.
UPDATE: The GAP Titan DX Vertical is no more. Thanks to the freak winter storm of October 29, 2011, the wind tore out a guy wire and the antenna came crashing down onto the deck. On the way, it hooked onto the HyGain 2BDQ Doublet and pulled down the end support for that as well. For all intents and purposes, I am off the low bands for now.
When running mobile, the IC706 connects to a High Sierra HS-1800 or a 6-meter vertical through an MFJ Coaxial switch. It also connects to a 2-meter/70 cm dual-band antenna for 144 or 440 MHz service. There's also a Yaesu FT1500M for 2-meters, an Alinco DR-235 for 220 MHz, an Icom IC-2AT running APRS, an Icom IC-F121 and a Uniden Solara DSC for the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Additionally I have a digital scanner and a 40-channel CB rig for other monitoring. These are all mounted in a Havis-Shields 17" console. There are currently 14 externally mounted antennas on the vehicle (a '99 GMC Yukon) as well as an internally-mounted antenna.
Other hobbies (as time permits) include woodworking, competitive slide photography, model railroading (at Christmas time in my living room and dining room!), genealogy, home automation and computer tinkering on my local network running Windows and Unix operating systems. Many of my favorite links for these hobbies have been placed in the menu to the left.
